Panama City mayor hints at Bitcoin reserve

Panama City Mayor Mayer Mizrachi has hinted at creating a Bitcoin reserve at the city level. His remarks followed a meeting with El Salvador’s Bitcoin leaders Max Keiser and Stacy Herbert.

In a short post on X, he wrote ‘Bitcoin Reserve’, sparking speculation ahead of his appearance at Bitcoin 2025 in Las Vegas.

Mizrachi has already supported crypto integration locally, with a measure allowing public payments in Bitcoin, Ether, Tether, and USDC now in place. The city plans to activate these payments once crypto-to-fiat infrastructure is established.

However, any move to create a national Bitcoin reserve would require approval from Panama’s National Assembly, and no such action has yet been taken.

Keiser revealed that the trio discussed Bitcoin mining and how Panama could follow El Salvador’s example by using hydroelectric power for operations.

Herbert added that Panama City plans to include El Salvador’s finance education textbook ‘What is Money?’ in its online library.
