Kentucky native accused in Bitcoin kidnapping case, released on bond - KBSI FOX23 News Cape Girardeau News

SMITHLAND, Ky. (KBSI) — According to the AP, a Paducah man known as the “Crypto King of Kentucky” has been released on a $1 million bond after being charged in a cryptocurrency related kidnapping in New York.

Federal agents say they seized a revolver and ammunition from John Woeltz’s Smithland mansion before his arrest. Woeltz and co-defendant William Duplessie are accused of kidnapping an Italian man from a Manhattan townhouse, holding him for 17 days while attempting to steal his Bitcoin.

Prosecutors tell the ap the victim was tortured, forced to take drugs, and dangled from a Soho staircase before escaping barefoot and injured.

Woeltz is now under house arrest with electronic monitoring and has surrendered his passport. Duplessie remains in custody. Their next court appearance is scheduled for October.
